Today started out to be a 'work on projects for my job' day.
That wasn't what happened though.

Around 11:30 I met Jesse, Christy, and her father for coffee at 318 Coffee and Bands.

After a fun time talking, playing, and hanging out we went back to Christy's house. I took a short nap with Jesse. I rarely take naps. It was nice.

Later, Christy, Jesse, and I went back to the coffee shop for some more coffee and fun.

We all feel right at home there.

Christy, Jesse, and I went to 318 Coffee and Bands for coffee, a cookie, conversation, and atmosphere. The three of us can hardly go anywhere without taking a few pictures.

The last time I did this it was monochrome so I'm doing color today.
These were all taken with an iPhone 4G. Post processed with the Camera+ app.

A church along a road I hadn't traveled before. There was an interesting graveyard across the street. I'll probably go back and take a few more pictures here.

You should know by now that hardly a week goes by that I don't have to stop for a train. This was no exception.

Who is that mask man?

I used to have a large collection of masks. I've gotten rid of a lot of them. I've hung on to this one, but it is destined to go. I just can't see it in an RV.

Now let me just stash this lighter in here for later. Maybe no one will notice I took it.

Flower Power

Jesse and I were in the Home Depot the other day and I was wheeling him around in the shopping cart when we came across this flower. He patiently waited (which is saying a lot for a two-year old) for me to take a few pictures.

The Bear Abides

The stores are all merchandising for Valentine's Day. These stuffed animals are cute. The bear is the one that caught my eye. He is one cool bear dude.

Christy, Jesse and I returned to the Horse Stomp campground for another hike along Weogufka Creek, We dropped Jeremy off at another location to look for arrowheads and metal detect.

This is the third week in my '1pm in my life project'. I'm getting better at getting them at 1.

Christy and I went for a hike at Cheaha Starte park. It was a great day for hiking, not too hot or too cold. The light was too harsh for photography though. I think that will be the case for outdoor photos most the time at 1pm.

This is along Tallasahatchee Creek. I was driving and happened to be passing by here at 1pm so I stopped at the bridge and walked down to the creek for a few shots.

I got a little out of control on this one. I was playing with the Diptic app again. On the left is one of Jesse's riding toys. Above right is a piece of pink quartz with an arrowhead laying on top. The bottom right is a section from a geode. All these items hang out in the sun room where I stay.

This is also in the sun room. It is a drum my aunt and uncle gave me years ago.

Christy and I went out for coffee at the new coffee shop in town, 318 Coffee and Bands. It won't be long until I'll be back to photograph when a band is there. The coffee was outstanding and so was the atmosphere.

On Friday I had a meeting an hour's drive from home. I was stopped at a red light when it was time to take a picture.

I had a great time the day I took this picture. I spent the day with Christy and Jesse. Most of that time I spent on the floor. I like to get down on the child's level. He likes it too. It also provides a different point of view for photos.

Lattes, beautification, pink hair

Life is amazing when you're open.
I started out today working on migrating data (like most days). I didn't have any plans other than doing that until bedtime.
The phone rang.

Life had other plans.

Christy called and we met for lattes at the new coffee shop in town.
318 Coffee and Bands has great coffee.

Amid the conversation, there was a lot of picture taking going on.

After visiting a consignment shop, we stopped in the beauty parlor for some beautification. Christy, not me. There is no hope for me.

Last stop was the doggie boutique.

I've been having a lot of fun with the SLFT-IP4 filters lately

especially the 3 kaleidoscope filters.

These two pictures are Jess's 'car' parked in the garage.

He has almost out grown it.

These two pictures are of a lamp and an oscillating fan (the fan isn't on).

The picture above was taken with one of the 3 kaleidoscope filters through a prism.

It is a street in the town near where I stay.

I have several masks hanging in the sun room and a kaleidoscope filter created this look.

I've also been playing with the macro filter. The picture above is of my fingers.

1PM in my life

I started a new photo a day project. The idea is to take a picture every day at 1pm where ever I happen to be at the time. Now I won't try to tell you that I took all these pictures right at 1pm but it wasn't too much after 1.

I've taken and posted a lot of pictures of this little fellow. He keeps me company when I'm sitting on the front porch. I suspect he will be keeping me company in the RV.

I discovered a logistical problem with this project. It is better to pull over to take a picture. Driving and picture taking just isn't the 'A' plan.

The big fuzzy road home in the car seat. We didn't want him to get injured in a accident.

I was actually in my office a few times this week even on the days I was off.

I guess you have picked up on my fascination with black and white photos of magazine racks. I was waiting to check out when I took this picture. Maybe I should switch back to the candy rack.

The drinking fountain down the hall from my office.

I do eat. This is what I cooked for lunch today. I'm not sure what to call it. It is pizza fixings on a flour tortilla. It was tasty so I'll probably make it again.

I'm going to try another week of these to see how it goes.

Glossy magazines to entertain and entice the customers while they wait in the checkout line.
Why do we have to wait? It couldn't be a planned marketing ploy.
We won't get bored, pick something up, and buy it? Surely not.

Everything wears out. It has to so new things will be purchased.
This motel has seen better days.
It was replaced by a 'modern' competitor.
Progress is grand.

This roofing business didn't make it either, but somewhere there are people doing roofs. I bought one last summer. Still leaks as far as I know. No wonder some of them go out of business. Ever wonder where quality has gone? But then again, the better the quality the longer it takes to wear out.

Think about the glossy magazines again. Look at this mess. From the graffiti on the walls it appears to be the work of teenagers. (not a criticism of teenagers. I think they are more fun than most adults.) Do you think they are weary of our glossy, scripted, constrained, boxed in, rule based society? I know I get tired of it. It keeps me safe and provides lots of creature comforts. However, the price tag is sometimes more than I am willing to pay.
Do you think they are still idealistic enough to see through the lightly veiled pipe dreams presented in the media? Are they resisting the constraints 'adults' have accepted as 'just the way things are'?

Peace, now wouldn't that be nice.

But wait, the military/industrial part of the machine really needs to kill in order to have a job.

hmmmm

I guess it is all in how we look at it.

I prefer a happy, optimistic point of view myself.

Photo review 2011

A few of my favorite pictures in 2011. These aren't pictures I consider to be my 'best' shots from 2011. They are pictures I liked for various reasons. I selected one for each month except a couple of times when I just couldn't make up my mind.

Jesse and Christy sitting on the hearth looking at the fire. It brings back so many memories. I have spent many hours sitting around this fireplace with my mother and father. My mother loved wood fires and she was the fire master loading and arranging the logs in fireplace. She and I would sit on this hearth, warming ourselves and chatting.

I do a lot of photo shoots with this family. They have invited me into their home and lives and I am immensely grateful for their love and friendship. This was taken the night Jesse got his first haircut.

There is nothing special about this wind chime display. I just think it is really pretty.

Taken at the Janney Furnace Civil War reenactment. It was the last time I went on a photo walk with the photo group I was hanging out with. They are good guys and we had a lot of fun.

In 2011 I spent more time fishing than I have in years. I went to Logan Martin Dam with Christy and Jeremy on several occasions. I tend to spend more time taking pictures than I do fishing. lol

These Elephant garlic were growing at this house when I moved here. I like the way the 'flowers' look waving in the wind atop their long stems. They remind me of the days on the farm when I had a large garden. One of the first things I planted when I moved there was Elephant garlic. Many people plant these in their flower gardens for their beauty and pest deterring properties.

The road trip Christy, Jeremy, Jesse and I went to Tennessee to see Starr art on First Friday. We stopped at several other spots during the three day marathon. This picture was taken at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. If I'm not mistaken, the three of them are watching the miracle that is Dippin' Dots.

I don't go to rodeos often. I had a good time taking pictures and learned a lot. Next time I'll take a monopod and a faster lens.

I took this at my daughter's wedding. It was an amazing day by any standard. I love her very much.

The looks on these young women's faces are priceless. I've been trying for a shot like this for a few years and now I know I'll be back for more. I can do better.

After a big day at Old Baker Farm, Jesse is taking a break with his pumpkin.

Every November for a long time my family has been gathering in Gatlinburg for a few days in the mountains. This is an unknown child standing beside a fountain in The Village.

Not every small town can boast about having alien visitors in the Christmas parade.

It is as close as it gets to Starbucks around here. You've seen several pictures I've taken here of the light/dark patterns created by the afternoon sun.

I've been driving by this cemetery for years and finally stopped to walk around.

One of our servers failed. That was a bad day. :-)

I'd like to say it is completely fixed, but that isn't the case.

A few things I saw

I stopped at the store to pick up some sodas.
Diet Dr. Pepper in my favorite.

On Thanksgiving I went to my sister's house.

This little lady was hiding under a big hat.and

the sun was hanging out on the privacy fence.

I don't know if you can tell from the picture,

but it was 30 or 40 feet to the top of this pile of rocks.

It was a steep climb and one I shouldn't have made out there alone.

I fell twice coming down.

Fortunately, I only tore my pants and got a few bruises, scrapes, and cuts.

More importantly, my camera came though the adventure unscathed.

After falling, I took a few more pictures.

A railroad crew drove up, gave me the suspicious activity,

terrorist lecture, talked about the police a lot, and told me to leave.

Since I wasn't on public property, I thought I should.

So I moved down the road to another train trestle.

On another photo adventure I came across this quaint little church in Alpine.

I tried out a different laundromat.
It was the best one I've been to locally.
There was an attendant and it was clean and neat.

I thought it was pretty cool

there were toys to play with.

It was a laundromat/car wash combination.

Since it was raining, I only washed my clothes.

Things pile up in a random fashion and are often pretty in their own way.

Like everyone else, I spend my share of time waiting.

I was sitting in the car with Jesse when I took this picture.

We stayed at Whispering Pines.

Everything was geared up for Christmas.

There were loads of lovely lights but it was too cold to be out much at night.

Thanksgiving wasn't totally ignored.

Once upon a time

there was a house that needed the kitchen and living/dining room floors repaired.

Workmen were hired.

Supplies were procured.

The first step was to remove the old flooring and fix the rotten spots.

Day two begins with a stop for coffee

and another trip to the home improvement store.

Slowly the new floor begins to take shape.

The historic Kymulga Grist Mill is near where I stay.

Located on Grist Mill Road four miles northeast of Childersburg, Alabama,
the mill is over one hundred forty years old.

The adjacent park is home to a variety of animals and plants.
Several large trees there have been judged by foresters to be older than the mill.

The mill was established in 1864.

I guess you can tell from these first few pictures that I've been to the dentist again.

I used the Salvador lens for the light picture and the chair picture

I stopped by the old store in the picture below

and was greeted by this giant alien spray painted on the wall.

My world seems to be populated by odd creatures.

These days they are popping up everywhere.

This oddity is a gear shift knob.

It was so unusual sitting on the patio at work that the security guard checked it out first.

I like this mode of transportation.

Sure beats paying these people for gas.

For many years I wanted to have a macaw as a companion bird.

Thank goodness I got over that. lol

I thought it was interesting the black and white swans were in the same exhibit.

This vulture had a huge wing span.

One person guessed eight feet.

I went to the dentist this week.

It is one of my least favorite things to do.

They didn't seem to mind the photography.

Some things are so consistent in life that we ignore them.

Every day at work for many years, these bottles (or very similar ones)

are sitting on a cart in the hall outside the maintenance man's closet.

Next door to the oil change place there was a pile of debris waiting to be hauled away.

Christy and Jesse took me out to dinner on my birthday.

We had a fun time.

Last week I attended a software migration information session.

I wandered around a lot in the early morning

before the sessions started.

Hotels are interesting places when almost everyone is sleeping.

They seem to change character.

I poked around behind the scene.
