Shelby Hotel

The Shelby Hotel, near Columbiana, was said to be the first in Alabama to have running water and electric lights. It was built in 1863, totally destroyed by fire in 1898, and rebuilt in 1900. read more

In 1863, the Confederate Army used the hotel and cottages as a hospital and a soldier's home. Father Leray and the Sisters of Mercy staffed the hospital.  read more

Garden Gate

The gate opens onto an overgrow pathway to the front door of this old cabin.
\

This is the other cabin visible from the road.

I was unable to go inside. There were numerous 'No Trespassing' signs and the property was clearly visible from a busy main road.

Heart of Dixie RR Museum v.4

Some of the things I enjoyed photographing most at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum were all the different colors and textures.  They were everywhere I looked.

Do you see the face in the lower middle?

There was no shortage of rust and peeling paint.  The man I spoke to who was restoring the old cars and engines saw the rust as the enemy.  I understand that.  Point of view has a lot to do with whether something is beautiful or ugly.

Heart of Dixie RR Museum v.3

There was a lot of signage on the trains at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. I took a few photos of them.   I think now, I should have taken a few more.  Maybe my next trip there will be for that purpose.

Heart of Dixie RR Museum v.2

Here is a group of plant photos from the photo walk at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. I was surprised how plants had gained footholds in some odd places.  Well, odd to me.  Obviously not to them.

I was also surprised to encounter this wasp who was intent on keeping me away from this spot.    The wasp won.  I moved along.
